Ficus robusta, commonly known as the Rubber Tree or Rubber Fig, is a popular and versatile houseplant with a distinctive appearance. It belongs to the Moraceae family and is native to Southeast Asia.
The Rubber Tree is valued for its large, glossy leaves that are typically dark green in color. The leaves are oval-shaped, leathery, and have a waxy texture. They can grow quite large, reaching lengths of 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm), and they are arranged alternately along the stems.
The Ficus robusta has a strong and upright growth habit, with a single, thick trunk that becomes more pronounced as the plant matures. In its natural habitat, it can grow into a large tree, but as a houseplant, it is commonly kept as a more compact specimen through pruning and shaping.
Rubber Trees are relatively easy to care for and can adapt to a variety of indoor environments. They prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions, although this may result in slower growth. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves. The Rubber Tree enjoys consistent moisture but should not be overwatered, as it can be sensitive to root rot. It is recommended to allow the top inch or so of soil to dry out between waterings.
