Lithops, also known as living stones or pebble plants, are small, succulent plants native to South Africa and Namibia. They are prized for their unique appearance, resembling pebbles with a crack down the center.

These fascinating plants are relatively low-maintenance, but they do have specific requirements for light, water, and soil. Here's how to care for your lithops:

Light:

  • Lithops need plenty of sunlight to thrive, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Place them in a south-facing window if possible.
  • Avoid excessive midday sun during the hottest parts of summer, as this can scorch the plants.

Watering:

  • Watering is the most critical aspect of lithops care. Overwatering is the leading cause of death for these plants.
  • Water only when the outer fleshy leaves (pleurocaps) of your lithops begin to shrivel and feel soft.
  • When watering, soak the soil completely until water runs out of the drainage holes. Then, allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
  • It's better to underwater than to overwater your lithops.

Soil:

  • Lithops require a well-draining, mineral-based potting mix.
  • A mixture of cactus mix, perlite, and sand is a good option.
  • Avoid using potting soil that is high in organic matter, as this can retain too much moisture.

Temperature:

  • Lithops prefer warm temperatures, ideally between 60-80°F (15-27°C).
  • They can tolerate occasional cold spells down to 40°F (4°C), but it's best to avoid them.

Repotting:

  • Lithops only need to be repotted every few years, or when they become pot-bound.
  • Repot them in the spring or summer when they are actively growing.

Fertilizing:

  • Lithops do not need to be fertilized regularly. In fact, too much fertilizer can harm them.
  • If you do choose to fertilize, use a diluted solution of a balanced fertilizer once a year during the growing season.

With proper care, your lithops can live for many years and produce beautiful flowers in the fall. They are a unique and rewarding addition to any succulent collection.
